Service Record

312245 Stoker Bertie Robert Hariss Singleton Royal Navy born 1890
Army Record On 7th August 1907 Bertie signed up with the Sherwood Foresters, number 2129. After 49 days he transferred to the Royal Navy.
On his attestation form his occupation was Farm labourer and his employer was Mr Derry of Tithby.
Naval Record Signed on for 12 years on 7th October 1907.
Occupation Farm Labourer.
Height 5’2”, hair light brown, eyes blue, fresh complexion.
Naval Record Bertie served in a variety of ships, progressing from Stoker II to Leading Stoker before requesting to revert to Stoker I. No reason is given in the documentation.

After being posted to various shore based training establishments his first long-term posting was to HMS Hawke in December 1909. He then served in a number of different ships and his conduct was generally marked as VG or good. He slipped to “Fair” on HMS Hermes. In February 1914 he was absent without leave and sentenced to 28 days detention and thereafter seems never to have had a character mark recorded!

He served in the Mediterranean in 1916/17 and early 1919 his ship was part of British action in North Russia in support of the White Russians against the Bolshevik revolutionaries.
He was discharged in 1919.
