WORLD WAR I

Bingham War Memorial

Service Record

136661 Driver William (aka Willie) Cutting Royal Engineers born 1895
Medal roll Awarded British and Victory Medals.
Service record Twelve images of Willie’s service record forms are available and mainly relate to his medical history. He enlisted at Newark on 30th October 1915.

After training he was sent to Mesopotamia, present day Iraq. He had a series of serious medical conditions, including hospital treatment for malaria, severe middle ear infection, scarlet fever, serious abdominal pains and bronchial pneumonia. He was eventually discharged with a 20% disability pension attributed to Malaria. Nevertheless he transferred to the Reserve.

The British force was primarily drawn from the Indian Army, which probably explains why one of his periods in hospital was in India.

He seems to have been available for three distinct periods of active duty:
June and July 1916, after the siege of Kut.
April-June 1917:
The Battle of Istabulat (21 April 1917)
The Battle of 'The Boot' at Band-i-Adhaim (30 April 1917)
Oct 1917 to Oct 1918:
The Battle of Tikrit (5 November 1917)
The Action of Khan Baghdadi (26 March 1918)
Turkey signed the Armistice on 1 October 1918.

The army forms reveal something of his personal history. He was born in Grimsby and his mother was Kezia Eldret, a single parent. Genealogical research, reported in the family history section below, shows that Willie lived in Bingham in 1901, in his grandparents’ household. When he enlisted his address was 5 James Row, Millgate, Newark. Subsequently he quoted his mother’s address (in one form as next of kin) as 1 Sharpe Row, Newark, which is off Millgate.

On enlistment his trade was as a labourer, but on a subsequent form he gave his occupation as chauffeur for a motor car sales room at 21 Castle Gate, Newark.

1896 Death of William Cutting, 29 July 1896 at Boston Dock, Fisherman of Grimsby. “Found drowned without any mark of violence”. Certificate received from Coroner, Walter Clegg. Inquest held July 30 1896. Lincolnshire Free Press August 4th 1896:
Drowned in Boston Dock
On Wednesday afternoon the body of a man was found floating among the timber of the dock. It was recovered and removed to the mortuary at the Workhouse and was identified as that of William Edward Cutting, a cod splitter on the trawler Brothertoft, who had been missing a fortnight. Deceased is a married man and was living in Spencer Street, Grimsby. An inquest was held before Dr Clegg on Thursday and a verdict of found drowned was returned, and the jury recommended the Dock Commissioners to take steps to make the dock less dangerous by ordering the quays to be cleared at night and by placing lifesaving chains on the dock side.
