On rationing:
- We got home on Christmas Eve. All the shops were shut and we had to wait until they re-opened to go and register with the grocers and butchers.
- We came back off honeymoon with about £9 between us, and we bought all our food, a set of saucepans, a bit of slab cake, and a very tough chicken. We had a lovely Christmas.
On bonfire nights:
- We had some lovely bonfire night parties, where the whole street went to the end of the road, which was called the ‘dump’ – just where a bit of field had been fenced off. John Attall brought a big tureen of tomato soup; someone else brought some home-made beer which was very potent. Others brought toffee apples. We had lovely parties.
