Bingham War Memorial

Service Record

F6105 [RN]
206105 [RNAS]
George Henry Snowden Royal Navy
Royal Naval Air Service
B. Bingham 1 Aug 1880
Naval Record Joined 30th June 1915 for the duration of hostilities. Occupation: Prison Warder.

Initially enrolled at shore training establishment HMS President, then assigned to “Wormwood Scrubs” from 30 June 1915 until 30 Aril 1917.

We have noted elsewhere that there was a shortage of ships, so perhaps, having been recruited it was decided it was better for him to stay in his job.

His naval record sheet was endorsed “If this man dies or is discharged The Governor of Wormwood Scrubs is to be informed”.

Height 5’ 7¼", Chest 37¼", blue eyes, Brown hair

RNAS Record Without leaving Wormwood Scrubs he became an Air mechanic and on 1st April 1918 transferred to the RAF which came into being that day. He was discharged on 17th March 1919 from Crystal Place Discharge Centre.

His next of kin was noted as: Gertrude Snowden, 56 Fitzneal Street, Old Oak Estate (Wormwood Scrubs, London).
The record was endorsed “notify HM prison, Wormwood Scrubs, of any promotion, births in family, or other circumstances affecting the Civil pay…”
Roll of Honour George is not on the RoH, probably because he had moved away well before the war started.
