Sapper Albert Rayson | Royal Engineers Northumberland Fusiliers 483rd (E.A) Field Co |
born 1885 |
Medal card | Awarded Victory and British medals | ||
The 1st East Anglian Field Company, The Royal Engineers,
later renamed 483rd Field Coy, joined 2nd Division in January 1915, saw
action at The Battle of Festubert and The Battle of Loos. In 1916 they fought in the Battles of the Somme and the Operations on the Ancre. In 1917 they were in action during The German retreat to the Hindenburg Line, the Battles of Arras and The Battle of Cambrai. In 1918 they fought on the Somme, in the Battles of the Hindenburg Line and The Battle of the Selle. No service/pension records exist on Ancestry. Thus we have no dates of his service in the units with which he served, nor why his service with the Royal Engineers was interrupted by a posting to the Northumberland Fusiliers. There are references on some web sites to the transfer of men from the RE to the NF to form a tunnelling company in 1914 (probably too early for Rayson –we do not have an enlistment date for him but lack of a 15 Star award suggests he enlisted in 1916 at the earliest). There are other references to men from the NF providing working parties to help RE dig trenches. |
