  Enlisted with Sherwood Foresters at Ilkeston 13/11/1916
Army records James had hearing problems and hernia trouble – he wore a truss. These conditions presumably contributed to his medical grade of B, which allowed him to serve in the pay corps in York but not to go abroad. See his enlistment papers for details.

Alice’s father was a relieving officer for MM Union.
One of her sisters was a pupil teacher, the other a clicker in shoe making. Her brother was a relieving officer’s clerk.

September 1910

In September 1910 Walter led a party at 6.00 a.m. to watch for “the first aircraft” (from Melbourne) to overfly Bingham. They took up positions in a field on Tythby Road.

Bingham Cemetery James Walter died 17th March 1949 aged 69 and is buried in Bingham cemetery with his wife, Alice, who died 24th May 1976 aged 89.
