1918 | Samuel’s father was involved in an unfortunate court
case in 1918: Nottingham Evening Post, 15/06/1918: Beef at £5 a pound. Although the charge formulated against Arthur Wm Downing, 48, of Bingham, was that of stealing two pounds of beef, the Magistrates in the Shire Hall, Nottingham, in fining him £10 today, were largely influenced in fixing so substantial a penalty by the fact that he had attempted to bribe a policeman. Mr R A Young, who prosecuted, said that the defendant was employed at some local works, where he earned 55s a week and received meals for half a week. On June 8th, Inspector Chandler noticed him leaving with a parcel. This the officer examined and found that it contained a piece of meat, which had been properly purchased at the canteen. Noticing that his pockets were also bulky, however, the policeman asked him what he had. Defendant replied,’ Nothing’, but on being searched, two pounds of beef were found on him, which he said he had paid for. Afterwards, he said the Head butcher had given him permission to remove it. The head butcher was sent for, and pending his arrival,, defendant said to the policeman, ‘’I’ll tell you the truth. I took it from the butcher’s shop this morning, when nobody was about.’’ Thereupon he placed a ten shilling note in the policeman’s hand. Downing pleaded guilty and was fined £10 or a month, the Chairman remarking that the attempt to bribe a policeman was a serious matter. |
