Source: Forces War Records.co.uk | The 10th Btn was formed in September 1914 and landed in France in July 1915. It was immediately engaged in what became known as the Battle of the River Somme. This battle was, in effect, made up of some twelve localised battles which were named after villages, rivers, hills, woods etc. such as the Battle of Albert, the Battle of High Woods and the Battle of Ancre.(the final battle) These Battles continued in this sector for many months from June to November 1916 with each side trying desperately to break the defences of the other with tragic loss of life on both sides. They were characterised by many small attacks and counter attacks followed by days and weeks of inaction caused by the torrential rain which turned the ground and the roads into rivers of mud. As the winter of 1916 worsened and the effects of the mud, icy winds, sleet and driving rain took hold and activities on both sides petered out on the 18th. November 1916 and were not resumed until January 1917. It was on that day, November 18th 1916 that Private Wright was killed. Two officers and 17 Other Ranks were killed. The full story in the original manuscript is in the war diary. | ||
