Hickman entered France on 19th May 1915. In early July 1915
the British forces including the 7th Battalion of the KRRC had captured
the village of Hooge near Ypres in Flanders, Belgium and set up their Divisional
Headquarters at the Hooge Chateau. However the Germans reclaimed this position on the 30th July 1915 using what was one of the first employments of the ‘flammenwerfer’ a flame throwing weapon, causing panic and confusion in the British trenches as their front lines went up in a mass of flame. With flames from some 150 of these weapons extending to up to 25 yards the Germans penetrated the British lines, pushing the British back with ease and causing them heavy casualties. It is likely that Rifleman Hickman was amongst them. |

War Diary | The first page of the battalion war diary notes that the battalion crossed from Southampton to Boulogne on 15th May 1917. Hickman’s medal card notes his qualifying date as May 15 1917, confirming he was with the battalion at that time. Several men were wounded in isolated incidents during the build up to a major action on the 30th July. It is not possible to identify how and when Hickman received his injuries. The war diary (images 6 and 7) makes specific mention of “liquid fire”. It also catalogues what went wrong with the British Action. | ||
