Canadian service records | From 40 images held on the Canadian web site, the following
additional information was discovered: Having joined the Engineers as a sapper, John was posted to England aboard SS Justica, a British troopship; he arrived on 14th May 1917. He was then posted to France on 7th December to join 78th Regiment. In his soldier’s will, dated 6th April 1917, he left all his estate to his wife, Catherine Alice, whose address was now Long Acre Bingham. He wrote the will whilst still in Canada; it was witnessed by two men with addresses in Montreal. On 16th January 1918 he was “dangerously wounded” (Gunshot wound to the thigh) and transferred to No. 30 casualty station where he died the same day. His record cards showed his and his wife’s address as 1061 Retallack Street, Regina. On one card this is altered in red ink to Fairfield Street, Bingham. On others it is given as Long Acre Bingham. Catherine was paid pay and separation allowance of $40 p.m. from January to June 1918 and a pension of $48 p.m. from the 1st July. She was also awarded a war gratuity of $100. Some of the forms show her Canadian address, some her Bingham address, depending on the date. In 1921 John’s medals were sent to her at Retallack Street. |

Father Richard, siblings Richard, Benjamin, Harry and Elsie all emigrated to Canada on the SS Victorian, destination Regina. Benjamin and Harry were listed as clerks and stamped “joining brother”. Mother had died and maybe the lease on the farm had expired. No record of Sarah in 1911 – possibly married and stayed in UK. Possibly not until after 1918 since parents noted above as from Tythby. | ||

Catherine Alice Derry | Various records on Ancestry.co.uk have enabled us to determine
something of John’s wife, Catherine’s, history. We have not found a record of her sailing to Canada or of their marriage. In 1916 Catherine and her son, John Edmund Derry, sailed on SS Gramoian, giving Long Acre Bingham as their address. In 1917 her address for receiving payments was c/o Mrs Smith, Long Acre, Bingham. On one record card her Bingham address was given as Fairfield Street. In 1919 Catherine returned to Canada without John Edmund, aboard the SS Scotia. Most passengers were soldiers being repatriated after the war. All were listed with their service numbers, or in Catherine’s case, her husband’s. Analysis of the UK Census for 1911 and 1901 reveal Catherine was the daughter of Edmund Derry Smith, the church sexton, whose cottage was on the corner of Fairfield Street and Long Acre. Bingham baptism records show she was baptised Catherine Alice on 23rd October 1887. |
